New Home Page (Dynamic Content Links) We have redone our home page to reflect our new search. Now when visiting the home page of the site you will notice your location has been preloaded allowing you to simply click on the category you are searching for in your area. If you visit the home page and see Detroit MI, simply change your location and future visits will load information for your area. This is done by setting a cookie based on your input as long as the cookie exists your city information will be present on the index page of the site. We felt that this would make the site a bit more user friendly and promote return visitation. We will be adding more local content for every city we have in our database. NEW SEARCH "What and Where" Our new search is an exercise in relevancy. We have found that the biggest issue people encounter while looking for a local business is that most search engines use the Business web site as a source of content in order to display results from your search. This works; however any business can simply add anything they want to their website or business profile making the search results returned by most search engines truly irrelevant. Myservicelocator.com uses a two tired category system to return results that are far more relevant than any other search engine. We have implemented a reverse engineered search on the site that allows you to simply type a short keyword to see a list of pre designated categories on the site that are related to what you are actually looking for. Sounds really simple and yet other search engines don't yet incorporate this logic into their sites, making your search an exercise in patience and futility. Over the last week we made a few changes. One of the most obvious of these is that we moved the site to a faster server. Some of you may have noticed that we were having intermittent outages on the site and some of the searches weren’t working well those issues have no be resolved. We hope that the move turns out to be more helpful than inconvenient in the long run. We will be doing a few more changes to the site over the next few weeks however none of the changes will affect the performance and should for the most part be transparent. I apologies for any inconvenience the server upgrade caused. Paging Results (Faster page loads) Over the weekend we changed how the search results work. We are now paging the results and showing 8 results per page. This change was made in order to speed up the time it takes to render each search. The search results are now displayed (ordered) by distance from the center of the zip code searched and by list type. We added search navigation directly under each set of results making it very easy to navigate through. We are aware that some of the companies listed on the site will now be located on page 4 instead of page 1, however the change was necessary and users of the site will appreciate the change. This new feature will also give paid for listings more weight and more value for the advertising dollars they spend. New feature - Content Publishing Well we're still at it; we just recently added a Publishing Feature to the site. This new Feature will allow Business members and the general public to publish information about the categories we have on the site. The benefits of this new feature are pretty obvious, the more content with-in the site, the more relevant the site becomes and even though we have a ton of content there is always room for more. The advantages for business owners are exponential in nature and we strongly encourage business owners to publish articles frequently. Give the advice people are looking for, let the consumer know what they should look for in your service fields. We are including your web site address with-in the publication so you don't have to worry about writing any HTML and doing this gives your company another link on the internet, well worth the time it takes you to write a small article about something that you love. New Category Added to Site 2008 and we are still here, although the new year has already been extremely busy in the last few weeks we added Electricians to the site. Each new category is increasing our and your link popularity, so the time it takes to add categories is well worth it in the long run. Mouse update, he's still lurking on a few pages in the site, soon to be wiped out probably with in two weeks. Hopefully. We have had a few questions concerning the free listing that we offer and one of the most common is "Why after the free trial duration does my description get removed?" the answer is quite simple really the space required to hold your company description and special offers and images actually costs us money and we aren't a huge conglomerate such as google or Yahoo. We rent the space and can't afford to host free listings with all of that information for an extended undetermined length of time. We all know that there are companies that charge up to $2000.00 dollars for what myservicelocator.com does. (This is the most expensive one I have found other than the Yellow Pages), our users need to be aware that however much we would truly like to make this a completely free service it is just not a possibility at this point in time. However maybe three, four years down the road with a little luck and a huge corporate sponsor it certainly isn't out of the question. As far as today and the foreseeable future we must generate advertising capital from the site in order to spreed the word that not only us but our loyal users exist. Happy Birthday- 2 Years Old Well, we made it 2 years, no small acomplishment in todays internet market. We have been so busy we actually missed our birthday by a few days. Over the last few weeks have have finished the Multi-List feature which permits our clients to list all of there locations across the nation, with just a few clicks.
